ALLOW UP TO 2 WEEKS FOR YOUR HIKE TO BE POSTED

Below is a listing of some hikes that the Club or one of its volunteers has previously hiked.  The descriptions are provided to assist you in finding/selecting a hike. All of the hikes can be done as day trips from Tahoe Donner, so they are generally within a 90-minute drive.  Click on a hike title  to go to its description.

A few caveats: The descriptions are not intended to be comprehensive and should not be exclusively relied upon for navigation purposes.  The Tahoe Donner Hiking Club is not responsible for the completeness or accuracy of the descriptions.  Trail conditions can change over time, and navigational trail markers disappear.  The difficulty designation may not apply to your capabilities.

Safety concerns: You are always responsible for your own safety–whether you hike with the Club or on your own.  It is recommended to hike with a buddy and to carry a map and GPS  (see Guidelines for Hikers).   Before leaving home for a hike, you are encouraged to check the link or other on-line resources for a more complete description.  For regular Club hikes, the hike leader has the ultimate authority to decide whether a hiker is fit for the hike.

Happy trails!

      HIKE: ACAC to Glacier Way
      ELEVATION CHANGE: 3000’
      DIFFICULTY: Strenuous
      TYPE: BLACK
DESCRIPTION:   Views, views, views.  And all within walking distances of our homes. Although we start and possibly end within Tahoe Donner, this hike will most likely show you trails you have never been on before and a route which links together many of your favorite destinations. Leaving ACAC we will 1st walk to and cross N. Prosser Creek on the SE end of Euer Valley. Next on seldom used trails and some “off” trail we will ascend the South ridge of Carpenter Valley till we summit on Red Mtn. From here we will continue west on a wandering route paralleling this same ridge, passing a few remaining north facing snow patches, rushing streams, and ending on the summit of Frog Lake Cliffs.  If there is enough prior interest and coordination we can continue on through the “Magic Forest” at the East end of Castle Peak ending our hike at the Boreal exit on Hwy 80.  Or, we can reverse course for a figure 8 loop descending via the Warren Lake trail and the Frog Lake trail and ending back at ACAC. Depending on the route chosen, we are looking at about 12 miles and about 3000 ft. of climbing.   This is a great time of year for wildflowers.  A typical Steve Miller hike for the fit and adventurous, on and off trail.

      HIKE: Donner Summit Canyon
      DISTANCE: 6 Miles
      ELEVATION CHANGE: 1000 feet
      DIFFICULTY: Moderate
DESCRIPTION:  The trail up the canyon follows much of the old Dutch Flat/Donner Lake Wagon Road, which later served as the Lincoln Highway. Some of the historic features visible from the upper part of the trail include Native American petroglyphs, the China Wall, and the world’s first automobile underpass (1913). Look for the abandoned Turkey Truck that careened off the road in 1955, scattering 30,000 pounds of frozen turkeys down the 175’ drop and delaying Thanksgiving dinner for hungry Nevadans!
The trail loosely follows the original Lincoln Highway route. The route traverses Donner Summit Creek and offers spectacular views of Donner Lake, Donner Peak, and Schallenberger Ridge as it climbs to Donner Summit.
For a green hike, stop at the Kathy Polucha Kessler Memorial Picnic Area with an amazing view of Donner Lake. Cross Donner Creek (easy late August) back down to the trailhead to eliminate the rock scrambling.
TRAILHEAD: From Truckee, proceed West on Donner Pass Road along the North Shore of Donner Lake. As you approach the West end of Donner Lake, go past South Shore Drive and continue up along Old Highway 40 towards Donner Summit. The trail head and parking area is on the left, roughly 1/3 of a mile from South Shore Drive (If you reach the winter closure gate, you have gone too far).   Please carpool with whomever you are comfortable with as parking is limited at trailhead.

      ELEVATION CHANGE: +3,300’
      DIFFICULTY:  Strenuous
DESCRIPTION:  This hike takes approximately 5 hours to complete.  Rising prominently and towering 3,500 feet over Lake Tahoe’s southwest shoreline, Mt. Tallac is one of the most popular and rewarding summits in the Tahoe region. The hike features breathtaking panoramic views of the vast and sparkling indigo waters of Lake Tahoe, and the glacially sculpted 63,000-acre Desolation Wilderness, where the water from dozens of pristine alpine lakes gleam in the mid-day sunlight.  The initial 2.1 miles follow along Fallen Leaf Lake’s shores through a shaded forest while passing Floating Island Lake, known for its drifting tufts of mini meadows, and Cathedral Lake, the last water source before the summit.   The real climb begins at Cathedral Lake as you work your way through the large granite Cathedral Bowl, gaining 2,000 vertical feet in just 2.4 miles. As previously mentioned, Cathedral Lake is the last opportunity for water before the summit, and it is highly recommended to either bring a water filter or carry enough for the entire hike. The trail switchbacks through loose shale until reaching the summit ridge line.   Use caution in early the summer months, as residual snowfields may exist and this section could be hazardous.  Once above Cathedral Bowl, the iconic trail continues on toward the summit through stunted white bark pine with the feeling of true high-country ridge line hiking. Just short of the top, the trail disappears into a crisscrossing network of footpaths etched into the summit boulder field. All routes lead to the summit with the occasional mild scrambling. Take some time to enjoy the spectacular 360-degree views from the top of this wonderfully rewarding and demanding peak.
With the hike being mostly sun exposed, be sure to bring plenty of water, or bring filters as there are water sources as noted above.
Day hikers are required to fill out a free day-use permit at the trailhead.

This route initially follows the ‘Tyrolean Downhill’ trail (where you need to watch for mountain bikers tearing down the hill!) and skips an unremarkable 0.7 m out and back segment to Hwy 431 (i.e., 1.5 m total) before entering the North Flume trial, the highlight of the day, a generally flat but often narrow 3-4 mile segment with absolutely stunning views of Lake Tahoe.

      DISTANCE: 8.9 miles loop
      ELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: +2,600’/-2,650ft.
      DIFFICULTY: Moderate/Strenuous
DESCRIPTION:   The Peavine Peak Trail is an arduous, rewarding hike that involves a 2,600-foot climb to the summit of Peavine Mountain that stands dominant over Reno, Nevada. Peavine Peak is actually two peaks. The west peak stands at 8,131 feet and is about 29 feet higher than the east. It is capped with radio towers that are visible from throughout the Reno and Sparks metro area. Peavine also has a place in local lore, as gardeners and food growers will tell you that the disappearance of snow on Peavine is when the time is right to plant your spring seeds.

There are many paths to the top of Peavine, from single track trails to wide and rutted four-wheel drive roads. This trail follows one of the shortest and most direct paths to the summit. The lower portion of the trail follows a single track dirt path that passes among sagebrush, lizards, and spent shotgun shells that dots much of the outskirts of the urban area. It then starts rising in elevation until the city is a view among the mountainous landscape surrounding the Truckee meadows.

There are many trails that branch in every direction up here, and though the way to the top is fairly straightforward, some navigational assistance is recommended as the abundance of trails may become confusing, and even finding the same route you climbed up on may become complicated.

The climb is relentless, and the shadeless trails leave you exposed to the elements. Expect extreme heat during the summer and strong winds year-round. Near the top, all trails meet up with the wide and graded Peavine Road for the final climb to the top.

Both the east and west summits are crowned with radio towers, and both offer views stretching from Verdi Peak and the Truckee River Valley to the west, Mount Rose toward the south, across the casino towers of downtown Reno below, to the mountains forming the eastern fringe of the Reno metro area. Once you’ve soaked in the views you can return the way you came or proceed down a shorter but steeper trail that leads to a third radio tower standing beside the intersection the Peavine Peak Trail and Peavine Road. Taking the shorter route will cut about three-quarters of a mile off of your distance.

TRAILHEAD: Peavine Hills Ave and Cedar Ridge Drive, NW Reno. Drive east on I-80 about 29 miles. Take exit 9 for Robb Drive. Turn left onto Robb Drive. Drive for approximately 3.5 miles.
      – When Robb Drive ends, turn left on Peavine Hills Ave. Drive for approximately 300 feet.
      – Trail begins behind a closed gate on the right side of the street. Park for free on the street.

About a mile on there is a closed gate on the left – do a u-turn here and park +/- 100 yards up the road where there is room behind the snow poles to get off the road.  Meet at the gate. (This is a very busy road – keep dogs on a leash as they get out of your car and thru the gate!)

      DISTANCE: 12.5 miles approximate
      ELEVATION CHANGE: +3,850’ / -2,400
      DIFFICULTY: Strenuous
DESCRIPTION: A seldom visited pleasure.  This is a point to point hike with a car shuttle. Gathering all hikers at Squaw Parking closest to tram, we will divide into cars to drive to Five Lakes TH on Alpine Meadows Rd. Climbing to 5 Lakes we will continue across the Sierra Crest and descend to a crossing of Whiskey Creek and take a rest break at the historic camp. Climbing on trail (name unknown but shown on maps and maintained) from here for 1 ½ miles we will eventually attain the ridge west of Whiskey Creek which can be seen from the top of Granite, Emigrant and Siberia chairs at Squaw. Following this off-trail ridge north over 3 small peaklets we will be afforded spectacular views the whole way. When we reach the summit of peak 8,535 we will look down on the remote Little Needle lake and can decide to descend down to its shore or turn west depending on conditions. In either case our next waypoint will be the junction of the Tevis trail with the PCT at a pass at elevation of 7,930. From here a straight forward walk on trail to the Watson Memorial and Emigrant Pass will lead us down to the top station of the tram and a ride back down to our cars and maybe a beer before completing the car shuttle.
